As the skilled nursing industry prepares for implementation of PDPM, October 1, 2019, some SNF’s are

taking a closer look at their medically complex residents, knowing that reimbursement increases with complexity of care. Clearly those receiving dialysis are clinically complex and drive higher reimbursement under PDPM.

One facility in Wisconsin will feature a dialysis unit, along with other specialized care programs. Two other facilities in Florida plan to pilot dialysis care as well. There is a significant need, approximately 10% of the average SNF census will need dialysis, and if the “logistical roadblocks and workarounds” are navigated it could be a win-win for both  those needing the care and the facility.
