Fighting frailty with food: early screening for malnutrition in hospitals

Many of the same ADL limitations identified in this June 6, 2019, Canadian publication are frequently present in nursing home residents: difficulty swallowing or sitting up or reaching food, or seeing the food, or opening containers, etc. We know protein deficiency and inadequate nutrition, in general, impact multiple physiological systems and as decline occurs frailty increases.

Too much weight loss in our nursing home residents is a Quality Measure appropriately tracked and monitored closely by CMS and facility professionals. Under PDPM, increased reimbursement will be driven by the management of nutritional needs.

When we all pay attention to the nutritional needs and wishes of our residents everyone wins, starting with the residents.
